The Open and Affirming Process
The Open and Affirming initiative of the national UCC organization does not constitute an attempt to give special rights or privileges. It is an undertaking that recognizes that Christian churches have often led the way in closing doors and condemning those among us who are part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community. We cannot ignore the need to be welcoming to all people on the faith path, but we need to provide focus and clarity, as well as clear communication about who we are and what we believe in this area of concern. It is our intention to be welcoming to all people, regardless of ethnicity, age, marital status, economic class, health or disability, educational level, and sexual orientation.
In early 2004 the Board of Deacons began its own study of these issues. Later, a study group of other members of the congregation, led by Rev. David Anderman, explored Biblical messages about sexuality, diversity and inclusiveness in the Church. Early in the fall the Deacons developed a brochure to present the ONA process to the entire congregation. It was mailed with the Church newsletter and made available in the Narthex. In November examples of Open and Affirming statements adopted by other UCC churches in Maine were included in the Church newsletter and made available in the Narthex to help in the drafting of an ONA statement of our own.
A draft of our proposed ''Open and Affirming Statement'' that was discussed at a working session after the 10 a.m. service on January 9th, 2005. Revisions were contributed by congregational members who attended this meeting. The final statement was voted on and approved at our annual meeting on January 30, 2005.
