Music for Lent and Easter
The Adult Choir will be offering a diverse selection of music for the Lenten season. Howard Helvey's ''Medley of the Cross'' featuring three beloved hymn tunes: ''When I survey the wondrous cross; Jesus keep me near the cross, and Beneath the cross of Jesus'', will be our anthem for Ash Wednesday on February 6th. A favorite from my high school days, ''The Celestial City'', has been made available to us courtesy of South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta for February 17th. This and several others, including Leo Sowerby's ethereal setting of Psalm 121, will tie in with meditations on the subjects of our stained glass windows. Haydn's stately ''In Thee, O Lord, Have I Put My Trust'' is scheduled for March 2nd, the solemn and intense ''Crucifixus'' from Bach's Mass in B Minor for March 9th, and The King's Welcome, based on a French carol tune, will be sung on Palm Sunday. Holy Thursday will feature a setting of a Southern hymn tune, ''Sweet the Moments, Rich in Blessing'' by Douglas Wagner. For Easter we are doing the vigorous and exciting ''Hallelujah, Amen'' from Handel's oratorio Judas Maccabeus.
Lenten Calendar for Nyumbanai Orphanage
The Sunday School is taking a special Lenten offering for the Nyumbanai Orphanage in Nairobi, Africa. Martha Cobb, who has visited this orphanage, made a special Lenten Calendar that teaches us about the orphanage while we give each day to its support. The congregation is invited to join the Sunday School in supporting the Nyumbanai Orphanage.
